Workshop Unmasking the Imposter “I can’t do a PhD! Who am I kidding? Soon they’ll find out I’m a fraud…” Do you recognize these thoughts? You are not alone! Many PhD candidates experience Imposter Syndrome. In this workshop, you will learn about the definition of Imposter Syndrome and explore several psychological frameworks that explain why these thoughts and feelings arise. Through practical exercises, you will discover healthy and sustainable ways to cope with Imposter Syndrome—empowering you to transform your PhD journey into an experience of greater confidence, self-acceptance, and personal growth. Mandy Hu is a PhD advisor and coach at the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School. She coaches and advises PhD candidates, designs and delivers workshops and courses on (inter)personal skills, and develops policies to enhance PhD support. Workshop Start-to-Teach During the Start-to-teach Workshop, you will delve into the kind of teacher you want to be. We closely look at what the VU defines as good teaching. We gather our preconceived notions on teaching, understand our expectations from students, and distill the requirements of an inspiring learning environment. We equip you with tools and techniques that help in the early weeks of teaching. How do you prepare lessons? How do you interact with students and build a relationship? Which teaching methods are suitable and when? Which dilemmas can be encountered when working with student groups, and how do we deal with these? Wouter Buursma is a trainer and educational specialist at the Centre for Teaching & Learning of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he teaches courses related to teaching such as the University Teaching Qualification courses for PhDs. Workshop Grant Application During this workshop, Joyce Putters will introduce relevant funding instruments for young researchers, such as the NWO Veni and Rubicon programs, the KWF Young Investigator grant, and the European Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships. She will offer advice on how to select the most suitable funding opportunity based on one's CV and ambitions, and provide tips and tricks for preparing and writing applications. This workshop is primarily designed for PhD students in the final 1-2 years of their PhD but can also be beneficial for those who have started their PhD more recently. Joyce Putters has been working as a program officer for NWO for the past four years. Prior to her position at NWO, she worked as a grant officer at the Cancer Center Amsterdam of the Amsterdam UMC. At NWO, she has coordinated several funding programs, including the Veni program. At the Cancer Center Amsterdam, she supported numerous researchers with their grant applications for NWO, KWF, and the European Commission. Workshop Connect Like a Pro Networking opens the door to new opportunities and can help you move forward in your career. With the right mindset and practical strategies, you can connect with the right people in a natural way. In this seminar, you will learn how to approach networking with more confidence, both online and offline. You’ll leave with useful tips and tools that you can apply right away. Farah Coppola is the founder of Mind Elevators, whose mission is to create the ultimate space where young professionals can connect, learn, and grow from and with one another. With her expertise in storytelling and networking, Farah helps young professionals build connections that truly add value. Workshop The Art of Presenting Science Ever dozed off in a conference presentation? Wondered why that problem could not be solved? Then you are most welcome. In this workshop, you will learn to use theatre skills to captivate your audience. We will discover the fundamental cause of the common attention loss and solve the problem together. That opens the way to maximum attention for your presentations, allowing you to present yourself in the best possible way. Result: More engagement, more fun, more justice to you and your content. At Artesc (www.artesc.org), we did not accept attention loss as a fact of life, while we can all watch movies for hours on end. Simple idea; ask actors how it’s done! That route didn't take off because actors use essential skills intuitively. We discovered the skills and learned how to teach them.
