About the course

This course teaches you the application of a range of imaging possibilities within the Centre for Microscopy at the Amsterdam UMC (location AMC & VUmc) and the NKI-AvL. They are presented in lectures, discussions and hands-on demonstrations. The individual research projects of the attending participants will be discussed in relation to the demonstrated techniques, allowing exchange of ideas with fellow participants and microscopy experts and operators. The course is a guide to implement cellular imaging in your own research project. A part of the participants could bring their sample for analysis after consulting with the organization first.

I found the course to be a great combination of theory and practical. The instructors were all very happy and enthusiastic to explain all the different types of microscopy used in the labs and clinics as well as letting us operate and interpret images. I also enjoyed the FIJI tutorial where we could learn how to improve our own microscopic images. I participated in the OOA Basic Microscopy course in April of 2024 during the first year of my PhD. The structure of this course across the VU, the NKI and the AMC allowed me to get to know all the available machines, and develop a network of both fellow PhD candidates with microscopy adjacent projects and researchers who are experts in microscopy. I found the discussion of our projects with the course organizers particularly beneficial, and I definitely recommend this course for PhD students that will need microscopy at some point in their projects or are unsure of what microscopy could bring to their research.

The course was useful to solidify some of the basic notions of microscopy which later on helped me understand better the different microscope techniques available and when/how to use them. It was great to see that there is a wide range of possibilities for the use of microscopy within the different research environments that are part of the OOA, specially because some of them were even unknown to me, giving a new range of possibilities to study different cellular phenomena. Overall, it was a great experience both in terms of learning and networking, and that is why I would highly recommend it for someone who wants a general overview of the basics of microscopy and to learn about what are the different options for the use of microscopy when answering a certain scientific question.
