Educational Program

Professional knowledge

Our PhD candidates work in a wide range of oncology-related projects, from experimental biology to clinical research. To provide a solid foundation in the many aspects of oncology, we offer the Basic Oncology course to all first-year PhD candidates. Once familiar with the basic principles, the PhD candidates can subsequently choose courses focusing on cutting-edge scientific topics and the core research activities at the associated institutes. These courses cover specific tumor types, topics within oncology research and new groundbreaking technologies, providing the students with the right skills and expertise to apply these methods in their own research.

Personal development

We highly prioritize the personal development of our PhD candidates. A selection of our courses focuses on enhancing the ‘general skills’ necessary for successful completion of their PhD projects and preparation for a future career. The annual OOA PhD day, organized by the OOA PhD council, is dedicated entirely to these areas, offering workshops on soft skills such as presenting, intercultural communication, data visualization, and leadership.

OOA retreat

The annual retreat centers on the research of OOA PhD candidates, with about 200 participants presenting their work through posters or oral presentations. PhD candidates manage sessions and award prizes, fostering skills in presenting and peer review. It provides an essential overview of all research conducted within OOA at an early stage of the students’ careers, contributing significantly to interaction among candidates of the two OOA institutes.

Cooperation with other graduate schools

Our OOA PhD candidates can also participate in courses and activities organized by other research institutes and graduate schools. We closely collaborate with the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School, AvL Academy, Medical Genetics Centre South-West Netherlands,  Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences and Graduate School of Neurosciences. These collaborations complement our educational program, providing a better alignment with individual interests and needs of PhD candidates, and expanding opportunities for cooperation and interaction.
