General or transferable skills are exactly what they sound like: the skills that you use in every job, no matter the title or the field. Some transferable skills are hard skills, like data analysis, coding or other technical skills, and some are soft skills like communication and networking. It is very important that you improve your general skills during your PhD training. These are of great use during you PhD training, but also in any future job.
The Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School organizes a high number of transferable skill courses, including the mandatory ‘Ethics and Integrity in Science’ course. Click here for their course overview. In addition, you can choose from various courses and activities that are offered by the OOA, Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) and AII (for tumor-immunological PhD students). General skills also include courses that are required by law in case you conduct research involving patients or animals.
In addition, the VU and UvA-affliliated faculties organizes a high number of courses which might of interested. The VU courses are listed on a website. The UvA courses can be found on the websites of the UvA-faculties. Please note; not all courses are open for registration of Amstedam UMC (non-faculty) members.
